A Futon is a traditional style of Japanese bedding consisting of padded a mattress and quilt pliable enough to be folded and stored away during the day.
The mattress is usually stuffed with cotton, wool, or synthetic batting that allows it to be folded away and stored in a closet during the day so that the room can be used for other purposes.
They are often sold in sets that include the futon mattress (shikibuton), a comforter (kakebuton) or blanket (毛布 mōfu), a "summer blanket" (タオルケット taoruketto), and a pillow (枕 makura) which is generally filled with beans, buckwheat chaff, or plastic beads.
Futons must be aired in sunlight regularly and many Japanese beat their futons while they are being aired to prevent the padding from matting.
