Marshmallow Peeps are marshmallow candies that are shaped into chicks, sold in the United States and Canada. They are made from marshmallow, corn syrup, gelatin, and carnauba wax.
The popularity of the candy can be traced back to 1953, where Just Born; a candy manufacturer founded in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, acquired the Rodda Candy Company and its marshmallow chick line, and, with an eye towards mass marketing the product, replaced the company's painstaking process of hand-forming the chicks with mass production.
While Just Born would soon introduce other colours and marshmallow shapes, the candy's original form as yellow chicks was what earned its name.
